On their way to Pennsylvania their car broke down. They had to live and work for this elderly man named Charlie. At first, Charlie doesn’t want Lila to cook for him, but changes his mind after a while.

Charlie liked to watch purple martins. Charlie would trap all the other birds that would harm the martins. Grady would let the other birds loose without Charlie knowing. This caused lots of trouble.
